Rainwater Relief

Stormwater culverts in Birkirkara

This project consisted in the construction of new storwater culverts to alleviate the problem that was being experienced by the residents of Triq Brared and Triq Anġlu Mallia during heavy rainfall.

These culverts are about 250 m long and are made of 500 mm diameter uPVC pipes. These culverts have been connected to the tunnel of the National Flood Relief Project that is going underneath Triq in-Naxxar through a new shaft that is about 15m deep.

The culverts catch the rainwater that descends from Triq il-Karmnu and Triq Anġlu Mallia through grids that cross the road in Triq il-Karmnu corner with Triq Brared and in Triq Anġlu Mallia corner with Triq Brared.

Mqabba: Embellishment and stormwater project

This work formed part of a project for the Embellishment and Stormwater Relief at Mqabba and was divided into three distinct phases:

The first phase consisted of the construction of a rainwater management system that passed through Triq Karmenu Ciantar, Triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija and Triq Xandru Farrugia.

The second phase consisted in the excavation and construction of a soakaway reservoir at a site in Triq Ġanni Darmanin. The reservoir was roofed over and covered with soil.

The third phase consisted of the construction of stormwater culverts in Parish Square, which culverts were connected to those already constructed in Triq Karmenu Ciantar. In this way, rainwater is collected from the square and the streets mentioned above and directed to the new reservoir.

The works were completed in early 2021.
